Norican submits science-based emission reduction targets for independent validation

We have submitted our emission reduction targets for validation by the Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi) this week. The submission follows an intensive process of mapping, analysing and evaluating our direct and indirect emissions, and establishing a baseline to track progress against.

The headline target, which is now pending audit and validation by SBTi is: To reduce absolute Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions by over 50% by 2032 from a 2021 base year.

Scope 1 and 2 emissions

We chose to develop our targets in line with the more ambitious goal of the Paris Agreement to keep global warming under 1.5 degrees Celsius.

Beyond our direct emissions, we also commit to engaging our supply chain and customers in setting emission reduction targets – aiming to encourage 25% of our suppliers by spend and 70% of our customers by revenue to commit to science-based targets by 2027*.

Our CEO Anders Wilhjelm on the milestone:

"This week’s COP27 summit has made it clear that we have very nearly run out of time to take action and prevent climate disaster. As a globally operating business with influence on some of the biggest emitting industries, it’s simply our duty to act and to act fast.

“The journey we embarked on almost a year ago, when we signed up, has already kickstarted a transformation in our business that I’m really proud of – across the whole workforce, in all our regions. And we will need all hands on deck.

The targets we’ve set stretch us and will involve a huge effort and commitment. It’ll be worth it. But to succeed and stay below 1.5 degrees, we will need to convince everybody we know, everybody we work with and buy from. That process has already started.”
